Is this the RGB module to end all RGB lighting devices in your house? No, but it could be for most people who want a quick solution for their bedroom, entertainment center, man cave, etc. Diffusion is as good as the pictures show, which is what I was mostly hoping for. The transitional lighting is okay, it’s definitely not mindblowing. I will say that when it transitions between purely solid colors that it looks great but when it does that “flowing” rainbow effect, you realize why these are $50 – $60 a set. I would personally use these to do background reflections off your walls and large surfaces and not as light bars openly displayed in your space.

The included control module is impressive. It’s definitely better than including one of those cheap, wireless remotes you sometimes get. You can also control everything through the smartphone app. through Bluetooth anyways. You can schedule when these turn on and off throughout the week. There are few devices, at this price point, that can reliably do that on their own. The custom lighting effects are not bad; they kind of remind me of custom lighting on gaming mice and keyboards (good but not great). There are lighting effects that other users upload to the Govee mobile app.; but the current list of compatible lighting effects is really small.

I can compare these to Nanoleaf and the more I explore RGB products the more I realize why Nanoleaf is as expensive as it is. I would say to get these instead of the more expensive Hue products. While these are great, I’m still waiting for that company to dethrone insanely expensive RGB lighting – this gets really close. I hope Govee keeps pushing the technology so we can get rid of all these Christmas light strips we’re putting in our rooms and entertainment centers.

Got a defective unit (bad connection on one side would have the wrong colors/not change colors etc. without tweaking the wire frequently) and had to contact service for “rapid replacement”. Typical Chinese customer service = they don’t take your word for what your problem is and offer to replace the unit, they want PROOF and many pictures. Not sure how I’m supposed to take a picture of my problem since you can’t tell just by looking at the lights what I’m experiencing. This is always an issue with cheap knock-off products and Govee is apparently no exception. Then again, they cost half as much so you get what you paid for… a decent product, cheaply made, and poor customer service.

Aside from all that, the customization in the app is very poor and unintuitive. Integration with smart home assistants and such is way better on the Hue ecosystem.
