Top Positive Review

I greatly dislike coming into an empty house and Alexa isn??t always helpful, HomeKit either. I have replaced ALL of my bulbs, except the chandeliers and five bathrooms with Phillip Hue. I have regular bulbs, BR30s, motion detectors, and switches in whites and colors. The sunrise sunset timer is my favorite, especially since I can make it random. The switches are perfect when Alexa doesn??t respond or we just need to be quiet. Set for the kitchen, halls, and stairs, I turn it on or off from the bedroom hall or the kitchen and adjust the the lights.

The convenience of the switches, motion detectors, and lights, makes my smart home smarter with the addition of new product. I have gifted Phillip Hue products to family and friends. The theme in 2020 was a Hue Christmas. The last purchase is for my godson. He can command the lights in my house and now his lights are on when he gets home, too.

There are lots of cheaper options but you get what you pay for. I??ve had my oldest lights in high traffic areas for over four years. During the pandemic, the everyone (and SIs) came here, and there were four of us working from home. There are at least 22 lights per floor, with more in the basement for the library. I was great to be able to turn off lights on the second floor, or basement, when we were around the fireplaces or hanging out in the family room.

Top Critical Review

My issues:

1. I bought this months ago, while moving in to a new place. It took me too long to try out the bulbs only to find one is unresponsive to the bridge and is even missing its serial number. I can??t attempt a return anymore as its over 30 days and I still and even find a support number on their website even if I could.

2. Not very dim. Wanted two of the bulbs for bedroom lights, and while they can get bright enough, their lowest light level is still too bright for me and my wife before bed.

3. Button only works well with Hue. I have smart home other devices and they??re all linked through Apple HomeKit. Button loses half of its functionality when used through HomeKit rather than Hue app, but through Hue app it can only be used with Hue devices.

All in all, maybe you won??t have the same issue with the borked bulb as I did and will have a decent enough time getting to support. But Hue is still one of the most recommended smart appliance brands that work with HomeKit and the fact that its button is so pitiful in HomeKit drops it two stars alone. Since I already have the bridge working , I could have seen myself maybe buying another bulb in the future but I don??t have enough appliances to bother anymore. Was trying to future proof myself with the bridge but Hue doesn??t feel worth it.

Customer Questions & Answers

So my understanding is that these bulbs require the hub in order to use Alexa voice control? No way around this?
Answer: Yes. I recommend the starter kit. It??s worth it. Without a hub, you can use the app to control the lights, but using Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant is much more convenient. Most lights that use voice control will need a hub, and the ones that don??t are generally very finicky.

can you now use this bulb in a fixture that is supposed to be hardwired and NOT wire it…just screw in this bulb?
Answer: Unlikely it will work if it’s not wired 😉

Is the hue hub the hue bridge?
Answer: Yes is the main communications device that all of the hue products communicate with.
